Team Fortress 2 Originals: Pyro & Bear (released in 2008)

Hey there! This is a first part of (reposting) really old work I have done more than decade ago. The purpose is to show what my work (posing, lightning, editing, writing) looked like years ago and how I gradually progressed. I think every Monday or so, I will repost an old comic and discuss its history.

For this particular comic, it also has another purpose, which will be in the Author’s Notes at the end.

  • The three Counter Strike: Source characters in the cover are from my other comic series Servers, which I will also repost in due time. I tend to have an attachment to my characters, so I usually put one, two, or all of them in my other TF2O covers when I can.

  • Pyro & Bear was a huge success across various websites I shared them at (Facepunch forums, GameTrailers, Pure Pwnage, DeviantArt), which motivated me to continue making more stuff with Pyro & Bear, but in other capacities. Also will be reposted in due time.

  • If it wasn’t obvious through the comic, the pair are heavily inspired by Calvin & Hobbes. I loved the comic series when I was a 7-year-old, which motivated my passion into making comics and writing comedy.

  • Several years after I released the comic, I would update the cover because I had a new plan to do something with the story, which I ended up doing many more years after the new cover’s release. Also will be reposted harr harr.

  • To continue off of the purpose of sharing Pyro & Bear first, I want to make a note that the pair has usually been appearing as easter eggs in most of my Source Filmmaker work to this day. This serves as both a fun easter egg for people to find and point out, as they had done so in non-TF2 communities I shared the respective works to, and as a “digital signature” so no one would try to easily claim the work as their own (unless they crop stuff out, which I have seen). Not all of my SFM/Gmod work will have the duo since it is dependent on the limitations of the depicted scene. Future works will probably have them, unless otherwise. Sometimes Steve the Bear will be either a teddy bear (a prop from Left 4 Dead) or the “realistic” Pyro’s imagination version. (the model is from TES4: Oblivion).

You made these when you were seven? Holy crap, man.
I mean, I feel old, but that’s incredible you were able to make that at just that young. Well done for that age, though i would nitpick that as fun as it is it dragged on a little.
The jokes still land, just felt it went on for a while.
Awesome to hear this got you into comics and screenshots though,
I only had Concerned and War of the Servers until I actually started talking with people, hahahaha

Nah, you misunderstand. I made Pyro & Bear when I was around 14 or 15? Whichever.

I got into Calvin & Hobbes when I was 7 and I began doodling random comic strips for fun. I got into making Garry’s Mod comics when I was 11. One of my very first Gmod comics (Servers) will be shared next week.

In hindsight, maybe I should have stuck to drawing lol.

I must have mis-read, my bad!
Woke up like two hours ago at 2am. @_@

Don’t say that though, we’re all glad you kept making comics and stuff, drawings included.
To say you shouldn’t have started is to discount the progress you’ve made. Look at how good you are at it now, your work is fantastic!

And what is wrong with fighting like a woman, eh!? It’s a good comic regardless, haha.

It’s cool to see how you’ve progressed with comic-making over the years!

Great share! I really enjoyed the Calvin & Hobbes joke homage. And jokes about Pyro not being able to speak. I think it’s both fun and important to still keep these old gems alive on t3h 1nt3rw3bz.

While I do agree with Gobo on the comic taking its time, I do remember this kind of longer comic usually being seen as a mark of quality back in the day. For a 14-15 year old to write, pose, edit and post a comic of this length is surely no small feat (as for a 7 year old… I’ll leave that unsaid).

And it’s interesting seeing the ol’ TF2 characters portrayed back when it was very novel. Some context for the fighting like a woman joke: this was back when everyone was convinced that Pyro was a woman (making the joke that Pyro fights like herself (I still believe Pyro is a woman))

Yeah, obviously this line would not work today. It is a product of its time tbh.

I have lifted the dialogue from one of the Spy’s domination lines against the Pyro.

and honestly, my headcanon for now is that the Pyro should be considered non-binary unless otherwise stated by Jay Pinkerton, Erik Wolpaw, or Chet Faliszek.
